This piece was inspired by my time in Slab City, CA. in April of 2021, written on the last day before I left to head home. Rerecorded and edited with video later to add found sounds from videos recorded at the Slab. Special thanks to Dot, East Jesus, Sabrina, and the others that I met while I was there.
There's a makeshift "coffee shop" in Slab City where you can buy a cup of coffee for $1 (bring-your-own-cup) and get free refills while you sit around shooting the shit with all sorts of people... I spent most of a day there talking to a non-writting writer name Sabrina who was going thru transition, but still referred to themself as alternating between he/she. We discussed her favorite writers, and I tried to encourage her to write again... fully hoping one day I will get to read that story. Late at night the whole slab is pitch black with no lights but stars, and yet you can hear movement and sounds of life in the darkness... the last night there, I laid in my van with my sidedoor wide open and wrote this song letting it float away into the wilderness... at least, that is, until something like a dog (or some other wild animal) came sniffing around my feet as they dangled outside my door. The whole place is so alluring, the freedom, the nothingness... it was nice.
